Secular Bands That Perform Gospel

Hymns are a HUGE part of the CHM experience and stay with us long after we've left almost everything else behind. I know we have some active music lovers here, so here's forum to discuss the subject.

Secular Bands That Perform Gospel

Postby Rocky » Thu Feb 26, 2009 6:56 pm

I hope I am not imposing any thing too heavy for the folks on this forum. If so I wont be offended if it is removed. It is not for everyone and I apologize if you take offense but the Bible says to make a joyful noise and I sure found this joyful.
Secular musicians have a lot to offer when it comes to good hymns. From Bluegrass and Country/Western roots most bands still do some gospel during their shows.
One of the most covered songwriters is the late Rev. Gary Davis. Here is a performance from the last Grateful Dead show before Jerry Garcia died. I will also post the Reverends lyrics so you can follow along.

If I had my way
If I had my way
If I had my way
I would tear this old building down

Well Delilah, she was a woman fine and fair
She had good looks, God knows and coal black hair
Delilah, she came to Samson's mind
The first he saw this woman that looked so fine
Delilah, she set down on Samson's knee
Said tell me where your strength lies if you please
She spoke so kind, God knows, she talked so fair
'til Samson said "Delilah, you can cut off my hair
You can shave my head, clean as my hand
And my strength 'come as natural as any a man"

If I had my way
If I had my way
In this wicked world
If I had my way
I would tear this old building down

Talk, Yeah
Yeah, Talk to me
Yeah, Yeah, talk to me
Yeah, what happened then?

If I had my way
If I had my way
If I had my way
I would tear this old building down

Yeah you read about old Samson, told from his birth
He was the strongest man that ever had lived on Earth
So one day while Samson was-a-walkin' along
He looked on the ground and saw an old jawbone
He stretched out his arm, God knows, it broke like flint
When he got to movin' ten-thousand was dead, Mmm

If I had my way
If I had my way in this wicked world
If I had my way
I would tear this old building down

Well old Samson and the lion got attacked
Samson he jumped up on the lion's back
So you read about this lion had killed a man with his paws
But Samson got his hand in the lion's jaws
He rid that beast until he killed him dead
And the bees made honey in the lion's head

Good God!

If I had my way
If I had my way
If I had my way
I would tear this old building down

If I had my way
If I had my way in this wicked world
If I had my way
I would tear this old building down
The music sure helps.

Probably right about the producer. Thanks for the direct link. Maybe the administrators will ok my account soon and I will be able to do it myself.
Over the years I attended many GD and Jerry Garcia Band shows and the gospel songs were the part I looked forward to the most. Many acts I have seen from Hank Williams the Third to Guns and Roses and some punk bands like Agnostic Front did gospel covers. My humble opinion is that any glorification of God is appropriate. Especially in song.
The music sure helps.

permissions

Postby Eric Zink » Thu Feb 26, 2009 11:45 pm

I'm hesitant to turn on flash permissions (since my post on how to enable flash, I've realized that it's not one of the basic permissions allowed to users). I've seen on other boards what spammers can do with multimedia. Of course, they can do a lot with photographs, too, and they haven't here yet. Maybe I will. Until I do, include the YouTube link and I'll embed the video as soon as I see it.

That's more than fair. As a forum host and administrator I fully understand the perils of allowing general freedom. I appreciate your quick response and gracious help. I will always remain respectful of you and the other posters and will not submit anything too offbeat. I am very aware of the beliefs both past and present of the members here being raised in a BMC preachers (Ron Holland) home. While I am not a Christian I always try to respect those who are and try to stay sensitive to their beliefs. Thanks for hosting this informative forum.

No sweat. As those who have been around know, I generally try to let people say what's on their mind as long as it's related in some way to the purpose of the board and it's not blatantly offensive. Sometimes I allow things that some would consider blatantly offensive because -- well, that's also the nature of this board.

I guess you can tell in the short time I have been a part of this forum that I love music. All kinds of stuff makes me happy but music has to be a part of it. Music has always been a part of the Judeo/Christian movement and I like sharing things done to praise Gods name. I hope you enjoy the things I bring here and encourage everyone to share their favorites here too.
This is one sweet song done by so many artists all over the world. Written many years ago by Haven Gillespie and Music by Beasley Smith, It has been performed by Frank Sinatra, Aretha Franklin and many others. This is one of my favorite renditions and it happens to have a soft country music sound.

The music sure helps.
